Fresh analysis indicates that patients who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end conventional lifestyle regimens.
Research printed in a leading health publication shows that while overweight individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals using such treatments must be aware of the potential of rapid weight regain when the therapy is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery means a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about a year and a half.
Comparing Approaches
The research, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.
Scientists point out that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically see a less rapid creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Understanding the Fast Regain
Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the heightened weight return.
These medications mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Condition?
Medical guidelines suggest the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals say that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy might need to be ongoing.
This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "emphasize the chronic nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Accounts
People who have stopped the medication describe a sudden resurgence of cravings.
"It was like something flipping and you become extremely hungry," recalled a patient.
This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Growing Use
Figures show that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.
- Adoption is higher among females than males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing behavioural changes.
