Fed Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Financial Instability

The US central bank cut borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second reduction in the current year during financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Decision Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank

The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Highlights Labor Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release reads. “Price increases has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually studies BLS data to assess employment trends, including the count of new jobs added to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in August.

The figure of jobs added to the economy in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Indicate Continued Decline

Though the bureau was scheduled to publish last month’s employment data in early October, it halted its publication when the shutdown began. Private payroll firm ADP indicated earlier this month that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said earlier this month, which he had earlier said comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Shows Moderate Rise

Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still issued its inflation report for September that indicated that prices are rising, although gradually. Costs increased three percent over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
