European Union Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the decision.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.
