A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the speed and handling of the country's flagship government projects.
The accident happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” stated the national leader.
The president reported that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The official stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the former leader, whose presidency concluded the prior year. This venture was closely associated with his administration's economic vision for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both rail lines was overseen by the armed forces, marking a notable expansion of its responsibilities in civilian projects. They were executed at an fast-tracked rate, surpassing expectations to be partially opened before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously sparked significant questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an previous accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition called for an prompt suspension in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This pause was suggested while awaiting a full independent investigation. The party stated that the loss of life "requires immediate answers."
In response, the head of state insisted that the train had been operating in total compliance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and operation of these strategic undertakings.
